Transpersonal Hypnotherapy
Telephone and In-Person Sessions
Lisa M. Gawlas, CHt, MT

In June 2001 I was certified as a Transpersonal Hypnotherapist by the Eastern School of Hypnotherapy now known as the National Association of Transpersonal Hyphotherapists (NATH).  Late June 2001 I opened a private hypnotherapy practice in Morehead City NC and now currently offer hypnosis both in person in my current location in Newport News, VA or via the telephone.  I have done telephone hypnosis with clients as far away as Ireland and Norway.

In September of 2001 I had what I call a dream come true.  I was able to meet and train under Michael Newton, PhD (Author of the books, Journey of Souls, and Destiny of Souls) in his very first ever Life Between Life Spiritual Regression certification classes.  The Life Between Life Spiritual Regression is by far the most life changing hypnosis session anyone on earth could possibly experience. If you have not read one of his books yet, I highly suggest the read.

I would like to offer you some information about what Hypnosis is and how it works. For a list of upcoming Group Hypnosis Events, scroll to the bottom of page.

Understanding the human mind and how hypnosis works.

Textbook definition of hypnosis:
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness which lies between awake and asleep.  It is generally brought about in an individual by the use of a combination of concentration, relaxation, suggestion, and expectation.

Transpersonal definition of hypnosis:
The "father of hypnosis", James Braid, coined the term hypnosis after the Greek word hypnos, meaning "sleep".  Hypnos was known as the god of sleep in Greek Mythology.  The word therapy is derived from the Latin word therapeau, meaning "God's work".   Therefore, we could technically define the word hypnotherapy as "God's work through a sleep-like state" if we were to take historical derivatives into consideration.

Some important facts about hypnotherapy: (click for more  information)
* No one can be made to do something under hypnosis that they aren't already willing to do.
* Everyone can be hypnotized providing they have normal physiological and psychological
functioning and therefore the ability to relax.
* You do not become unconscious when you are under hypnosis.  You are aware of everything that is                   happening within your environment as well as the inner mind.
Aspects of the mind:

The conscious mind is what chooses to act upon the information that it is given both from the external environment and the internal environment.  The conscious mind has also been called "the will: or "the ego".  It's function is to perform such actions as judging, rationalizing, deciding, and analyzing. The conscious mind cannot be detached in hypnosis.  However, there is a need to subdue the conscious mind in order for hypnosis to be effective.  Virginia Satir, a wonderful family therapist, discovered other functions of the conscious mind such as generalizing, distorting, and deleting.  As a result of these realizations, our logical mind will always be biased (generalization); it will always miss things we are not paying attention to (deletion); and it will always create logical meaning according to our past experiences (distortion). The conscious mind gives meaning to our internal and external environment thru these perceptual filters as it gets input from other aspects of the mind (such as the unconscious and unconscious minds).

The subconscious mind is the part of the mind that produces imagery that is readily available to the conscious mind.  In our daily awareness, one has images brought to them in the form of the 5 senses (sight, sound, feeling, smell  and taste).  These images are selected instantaneously and automatically as the root function of the subconscious mind.  The subconscious takes everything literally and personally.  Everything we are exposed to becomes a unconscious experience, at least temporarily until we give it something else to concentrate on.  (It is at this level of the mind where suggestion therapy works from, such as weight loss, stop smoking, etc.)

The unconscious mind is the area that produces imagery that is generally unavailable to the conscious mind.  This area of the mind contains forgotten information.  This domain of the human mind represents the majority of our thoughts.  Impulses, compulsions, habits, and emotional feelings are rooted in this area of the mind.  (This is the level of the mind where our memories of past lives are stored and accessed.)

The superconscious mind is the area of the mind that represents both mass consciousness and spiritual influences. This area of the mind can be referred to as the aspect of the mind that connects oneself to everything else.  This area of the mind gives us intuition.  The superconcious gives us spiritual insights from the non-physical dimensions of thought.  It is at this level of the mind that we connect to our spiritual guides and angels. (This is also the level of the mind where Life Between Lives Spiritual Regressions is done thru.)

A brief expatiation of
The prime directives of the unconscious mind

The primary directives of the unconscious mind.
The unconscious mind's function is primarily involuntary and automatic.  Its more concrete partner is the subconscious mind, so the terms "subconscious" and "unconscious" are often used interchangeably.

  • Store and organize memories.  All unconscious and subconscious information is formulated from memories.  We store each experience that we have through the conscious mind's filters of perception which include: generalization; deletion; and distortion.Generalization serves as the primary interactive perceptual function for the subconscious and unconscious areas of the mind..  Every human being is biased automatically according to his or her past experiences.

  • Store and operate emotions.  Emotions are generally created from significant experiences which are then stored metaphorically as memories.  The memories that are stored in the unconscious mind are most powerful.  Since their origins are unconscious memory forms, they usually surface in the form of impulses and compulsions.  The decision to behave one way or another depends on how one feels about a specific subject matter.  Emotions are the root of behavior; they are the driving force for the decision to act.  The greatest benefit from hypnotherapy can be achieved from changing unconscious emotions which have no subconscious memory associated with them.  When someone says "I don't know why I feel this way..." it is usually forgotten memories that are causing the problem.

  • Operate and preserve the physical body.  The unconscious mind preserves he body with thought.  Thoughts and feeling are stored in the body. The autonomic nervous system runs the various areas of the body such as the heart, lungs, immune system and so on.  Therefore, what people say to themselves and hear in their environment directly affects the body.

  • Experience and replicate the world metaphorically. The internal environment of the mind uses metaphors in the form of imagery to allow people to have thoughts.  Thoughts, therefore, are metaphors or symbols representing our experiences. Thoughts are subjective and not objective.  Memories are also metaphors for experiences that change to some degree over time.

  • Accept things literally and personally.  The subconscious and unconscious minds do not process negatives.  The subconscious mind is like a child's mind.  When you tell a young child "don't spill the glass of milk" often the next thing that happens is the child spills the glass of milk. That is because the subconscious mind will imagine every word before it cancels out the idea to create a new one.  It hears everything on a very simple level.  So in asking the child to not spill the glass of milk, the mind first imagined the glass of milk spilling and did not take the next step of the image of not spilling it.  Eery word creates meaning in the subconscious and unconscious minds.  There areas of the mind do not detect negatives the way the conscious mind does.

  • Maintain genealogical instincts.  Our unconscious thought processes include that which our forefathers experienced.  The most valued experiences are genetically passed on to our unconscious mind and come out in the form of impulses. Some of the genetic programs include the fight or flight instincts (going as far back as our caveman days) as well as eating, sleeping, reproduction and more.  The unconscious mind contains more instincts (or preconceived thoughts) than can be listed.

  • Create and maintain least-effort habit patterns.  All habits enhance ones ability for learning new information.  One a habit is formed in the subconscious mind, a person may comfortably run the pattern with very little effort.    One benefit of creating a habit is to free up the mind to experience new information.  Once a habit is installed in the unconscious mind, the conscious mind can concentrate on other things.  Human beings are indeed "creatures of habit".  Most habits are good for the person, unless they cause bad side affects such as health problems or undesired behavior.  In those cases people will seek to change their habit.  This can be difficult if the immediate gratifications of the happen outweighs the health or possible well being of the individual.

  • Co-create the future through imagination.  Imagination is a subconscious function to where whatever we focus on in our imagination will become a future reality in some way, shape or form.  Imagination is not pretend, false, or unreal.  In fact, it is the determining factor for our concept of reality.  Webster's dictionary defines the word "imagination" as "the production of imagery". The future of individuals is largely determined on what we imagine or put our energy in to, especially emotionally driven images.  These images have emotional drivers that make one's imagination manifest more quickly.  Through hypnosis we can step into and live the desired future before we get there.  Which makes imagination under hypnosis more powerful than imagination in the waking state for creating a desirable future outcome.

  • Provide doorways to spiritual awareness.  There are a vast number of ways to connect to a higher power.  Generally they involve the use of altered states and ones imagination such as prayer, meditation, or hypnosis.  In other words, a relaxed mind and our imagination is the key to spiritual awarens.es

Allowing Hypnotherapy too totally relax your body and mind.
When was the last time you allowed yourself to relax?  I mean totally and completely relax?   Turning off the world around you and just falling into a state of nothing-ness, where there is no stress, no worries, just a state of pure and simple relaxation.

It is in this state of nothing-ness... or better said, a state of just Being, where all of our questions are answered, things we see as "problems" become understood, and life just flows in one beautiful motion.

It is in this state we awaken to the power within.  The life force that is God.  It is where healing and Divine growth takes place.  It is where your subconscious habits can be changed, lost memories accessed , current life issues resolved.

Regardless of the reason you are thinking about doing hypnosis, the one thing you will also gain from your hypnosis experience is absolute and total relaxation.  I am a huge advocate of listening to the silent whispers within.  It is in the silence of the mind that all things can be heard.  Because of this I choose to only use my voice to relax you and create the suggestions to repattern your habits.  Because even in doing hypnosis you are creating a new habit, beyond the suggestion therapy.  You are creating the habit of being still within.  Of focusing the mind on the silence and therefore will have openings to hear the higher realms of awareness, those realms of spirit.  I would like you to start out with a good habit, not being dependant on music to help you relax.  Even gentle calming music can be distracting when listening to the inner whispers of spirit.  My belief is "focus on one thing and become that thing".  When you are in that space of silence within, all things can be heard.

Please don't tihnk that Hypnosis is supposed to put you to sleep or make you unconscious.  Athough hypnosis can help you fall to sleep, it is truly a state of heightened awareness.  You are more alert due to the fact you have relaxed your conscious mind and now your senses are in a very aware state.  Your hearing becomes sharper, your sense of smell becomes sharper, and your subconscious mind allows you to release your hidden memories (as in a past life regression or life between life regression).  It also allows you to connect to your spiritual team (guides and angels) thru this heightened state of awareness..
